Episode Transcription

[MUSIC PLAYING] MARIANNE CANADA: Hello and welcome to HGTV Obsessed, your podcast for all things HGTV. Do I sound excited? Because today we have the Property Brothers joining us. I know. I will just give you a moment to compose yourselves.

We are talking all about their latest show on HGTV and Discovery Plus, Celebrity IOU. You guys, this show will blow your mind. They're giving us all the dirt on what celebrities got down and dirty during these generous home renovations.

I'm your host, Marianne Canada, executive producer and HGTV lifestyle expert. And I am just honestly, I can't even-- I have no chill today. I'm having a complete fangirl moment that Drew and Jonathan are on the show. I feel like this is what we've been working up to.

BRAD: Marianne, producer Brad here, question for you. And it's very, very Brad question, very "x-filesy" Brad question, do you believe in twin telepathy?

MARIANNE CANADA: Twin telepathy, I do believe in it. I have seen two, I have known some twins. I just think when you share that much DNA, and you're in the womb together, I do. I think there's a real connection there. I think it's cool. Do you?

BRAD: I think it's spooky.

MARIANNE CANADA: Oh, no.

[LAUGHTER]

BRAD: All these stories I've heard, they can do crazy things. They know how either are feeling. They can be in different states and like, oh, something's happening. That's crazy.

MARIANNE CANADA: But Brad, you love comic books. This is like a superpower. I would think you'd be into it.

BRAD: I'm so into it, but it's still creepy. But I'm so into it. And I wish I had that power. I wish I had any kind of superpowers whatsoever.

MARIANNE CANADA: I grew up reading Sweet Valley Twins and then Sweet Valley High. Those books were very informative to me. And I just was obsessed with the idea of having a sibling that I was that tight with.

BRAD: And you can tell in interview, they were tight. They knew what they were going to say. They knew, OK, now it's time for a joke. And they both told a joke without any eye contact or anything. They were just so in sync with each other.

MARIANNE CANADA: Yeah, it's amazing. And now I'm kicking myself. I should have asked them. I'm going to save that for next time because we're definitely going to have to have them back on. We only scratched the surface of everything going on with the Property Brothers.

Enough of our 1,000% non-scientific twin theories. I know you all are so ready to get to the Property Brothers. So we are going to delay no more. Here is my chat with Jonathan and Drew Scott.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

Well, Jonathan and Drew, welcome to HGTV Obsessed. We're so happy to have you guys.

DREW SCOTT: Wait, does this mean we're obsessed with you or you're obsessed with us?

JONATHAN SCOTT: Both.

MARIANNE CANADA: That's a great question. I think it's both. I think it's a mutual obsession.

JONATHAN SCOTT: Is your last name actually Canada?

[LAUGHTER]

MARIANNE CANADA: Yes, indeed, just like the country.

JONATHAN SCOTT: This is meant to be. You know we were born in Canada, right?

MARIANNE CANADA: Oh, I know. And I actually had this exact conversation with Scott Mcgillivray.

[LAUGHTER]

And I told him no one gets more excited about my last name than Canadians.

JONATHAN SCOTT: I also love how you pronounce his last name. You made it fancy, says, Scott Mcgillivray.

[LAUGHTER]

MARIANNE CANADA: Like, hey. Yeah, you know.

JONATHAN SCOTT: There's something about Canada. Scott is one of our longest friends. But he looks really great for 65.

[LAUGHTER]

MARIANNE CANADA: Really aging like a fine wine that guy.

JONATHAN SCOTT: I'm telling you, whatever's in that Canadian water.

MARIANNE CANADA: Well, they clearly grow them tall and healthy up there in the Great White North. Before we get started, I do want you guys to introduce yourselves so our listeners can try to tell who is who. Do you guys run into this a lot?

DREW SCOTT: Yeah, you guys can try. I even think that my voice is Jonathan sometimes. So this is Drew.

JONATHAN SCOTT: This is Jonathan.

DREW SCOTT: And we're the Property Brothers.

JONATHAN SCOTT: This is Jonathan. I could talk in a British lady voice if that would make it easier for the whole interview.

[CHUCKLES]

MARIANNE CANADA: Actually, yeah. Let's go with that, I think we should lean into that.

DREW SCOTT: Ed Sheeran on helium or something like that, I don't know.

MARIANNE CANADA: I feel like you should consider that as the next step in your career.

JONATHAN SCOTT: Way back in the day when we were actors, as kids, Drew had on his resume that he could do like 40 accents and I was, he was the worst.

DREW SCOTT: They all sounded the same. And I even had a special skill on my resume that was "twin".

MARIANNE CANADA: Twin.

[LAUGHTER]

JONATHAN SCOTT: I think that's the whole thing, is you got to fake it till you make it as an actor. And so anything you could write down in your resume, it's fine.

DREW SCOTT: I used Jonathan's voice reel actually. When I was doing auditions and voice work, I would submit his character real because I'm like, well, our voices are the same, it works.

[CHUCKLES]

MARIANNE CANADA: Oh my gosh. This is like real life Sweet Valley Twins situation here, which was like my favorite book growing up.

DREW SCOTT: They were prettier than we were.

[CHUCKLES]

MARIANNE CANADA: Well, it's debatable really. It depends on your perspective. All right. I know you guys are very busy. And I really want to dive right into the newest season of Celebrity IOU because I saw that first episode. And I am Celebrity IOU obsessed, not just HGTV Obsessed. Can you guys tell us a little bit about the show and why it's so special to you both.

JONATHAN SCOTT: So we had actually started pitching Celebrity IOU years ago, probably about five years ago or something like that. And we met Viola Davis at an Emmys awards event. And we said, we're working on this idea, and we think it'd be cool. And she's like, I am on board, I know who I'd give back to.

And it took about five years for it to happen. And when we launched last season with Brad Pitt and Melissa McCarthy and Viola Davis, a ton of amazing names, the audience just loved, not only learning something, seeing these celebrities in the light they'd never seen before, but also just seeing the scope of the transformations. It was pretty incredible. So this season, we took it up even a notch again.

DREW SCOTT: Yeah. Really that is what-- well, the thing that I love the most about the show is that you honestly are seeing these celebrities in a way you've never seen them before, the emotional stories and the connections that they have to these people they love that they're giving back to. Every renovation is unique because every story is unique. And if you watch Celebrity IOU and you don't cry, there's something wrong with you.

MARIANNE CANADA: It's so true. Well, you were talking a little bit about these incredible transformations. And this first episode of the newest season with the Kardashians, talk about a big name, you all gave one of their close family friends outdoor area a makeover unlike I have ever seen before.

JONATHAN SCOTT: It was actually the largest outdoor makeover I think we've ever done. And it wasn't initially supposed to be so. But once we'd started, then Drew and Kris Jenner had concocted this plan to add this big pool in a different location. And they managed to pull it off and convince me to do it. But it that was not originally going to happen.

DREW SCOTT: And again, for anybody who watches HGTV, this is probably one of the biggest outdoor backyard renovations ever done on HGTV. So it's worth hopping on and watching that first episode.

The main thing here for Kris is she's giving back to her best friend Lisa. Lisa is a godparents to Kris's kids, and they've known each other for over 40 years. And Lisa's been through a really hard time. Over the past year, her husband has passed away and her mom passed away. And so she just didn't know where her life was going.

And Kris, she just moved into the neighborhood, where Kris says she saved up every penny to get the house but she had nothing left to do the yard. And it literally was like a desert. There were tumbleweeds floating by.

JONATHAN SCOTT: It was a wasteland.

DREW SCOTT: It was a wasteland. And so it's really great to come in and help.

MARIANNE CANADA: Not even a front stoop. it was just like that house was dropped onto a patch of dirt.

JONATHAN SCOTT: It probably would have been one of those things where Lisa would just have made do with it for a while. And we didn't want that. She's been through enough.

And I will admit I don't know or I didn't know a lot about the Kardashians at that point. I'd heard Kris is a very, very savvy businesswoman, and really, she goes for what she wants. I was so impressed.

And I had a completely wrong image of what Kris and Kendall and Kim were like because they came in their legitimate hearts of gold. They really wanted to do something nice for Lisa. Kim said right from the beginning, I'm wearing high heels. I'm not swinging a sledgehammer, but I will pick materials. I will go through the design stuff, and she did.

DREW SCOTT: She had a great design eye. She really did. And then it was funny, so Kendall was the first one to jump in. She got into a backhoe and started working the heavy machinery. Then Kris is like--

JONATHAN SCOTT: She can work a runway and she can work the machine.

DREW SCOTT: Yeah, exactly. And then Kris was like, she's not one up in me. So she was in there with a jackhammer. We were ripping up boards.

And that's the thing with Celebrity IOU. This isn't just a celebrity saying, Drew, Jonathan, give back to these people I love. All right. Have fun and do it. They are in there through the whole process.

And it is really amazing to see even if they've never done-- this season we have Ali Wong, Josh Groban, Gwyneth Paltrow. There are so many, many of the talent. Kevin Hart were saying that they had never done physical labor like this before of construction, renovation. Yet they're willing to do it because they love these people so much.

JONATHAN SCOTT: I had to laugh because Darren Criss, it was like something out of Cirque Du Soleil. He jumped-- we were converting this garage into an office for his manager, who's been with him forever. And he jumped up onto this rickety shelving, and he's ripping things out with his bare hands. And he's like, you could tell he got the thirst for demolition. And he just wanted to keep going. And then at the end when it was all done, Darren wrote a song about the whole experience.

DREW SCOTT: We jammed out together.

JONATHAN SCOTT: It's unbelievable. You will ugly cry. You will be moved. You will just love this season. It's the best yet.

MARIANNE CANADA: Yeah, it's truly spectacular. And I watch a lot of HGTV. It's literally part of my job. I've just never seen anything like it. And you do. Kendall Jenner in there on that skid steer and Kris Jenner with that jackhammer. I think everyone wants to know who really was into getting their hands dirty like Darren Criss. But also, who wanted nothing to do with it? I'm thinking about your own partner, Jonathan.

JONATHAN SCOTT: Oh, 100%. Let's just say last season, Zoe was not-- she admitted she did it because it was for her friend Sarah. But she's like, I hate it. I hate the noise.

It was the same this season. So both Ali Wong and Gwyneth Paltrow said they do not like the noise. They do not like the dirtiness, but they'll do it. And every time there was a bang, Ali Wong would be like, ah, ooh. And she's like screaming everything. But at the end of the day--

I will say with Gwyneth, I've literally never ever come across somebody who is as confident as she was in taking the reins, the design reins, and making all the selections. Usually, I'll go in, and I'll make the suggestions and see if they want to tweak anything. She's like, nope, I got this. And you can tell she's obviously got a good design eye because she was that confident.

There was nobody who said they don't want to do it. Well, Kim was the only one. She wanted to really get hands on with the design. But all the episodes, LeAnn Rimes as well, she's never done renovations like this before.

DREW SCOTT: LeAnn shows up with ripped off sleeves and muscles out. Actually, in that episode, if you want something funny, because Leanne was showing the pipes. She's in great shape. And so Jonathan was like, oh, maybe I should show my pipe. So I walked over, and I ripped the arms off of Jonathan's plaid shirt so that he could show his guns. Not as impressive.

JONATHAN SCOTT: That was my favorite plaid shirt too.

DREW SCOTT: But not story.

MARIANNE CANADA: Ooh.

DREW SCOTT: Yeah, your favorite? Well, I still have it if you want it back. Leanne is giving back to her therapist and someone who's been a big part of her life for such a long time. And really helped her through some of her darker moments.

And she's very open talking about her past depression. And I really think it's cool that she's helping show people and set the example of how it's important to talk about how you feel and not to bottle up. And so she wanted to go big. And it was transforming the kitchen within an outdoor kitchen and we put in. It was absolutely amazing.

MARIANNE CANADA: These are just incredible projects. There's a lot of heart behind them. There's also like a pretty significant budget behind them. For people who watch the show, and they're so into it, and they're so inspired, but maybe they don't have a Kardashian budget, and they don't have the Property Brothers skills there to design it and bring in incredible olive trees and move a pool, do you guys have either some advice or some takeaway for how people can still find some approachable inspiration in the show?

JONATHAN SCOTT: Yeah. I think the big thing you have to think about is, first and foremost, your home should make your life easier. And so if there's something in your home that you are like, I just stress about this every day. It makes life difficult.

For some people maybe, if you have four kids, you spend half your life doing laundry, maybe it's worth spending a little extra in the laundry area to make sure you're improving it. Their washer and dryer say that'll do a 15-minute wash, 50-minute dry. That would save a lot of your time.

So first and foremost, we always say, look at what would make your life easier in your home. And sometimes, that's even from an aesthetic standpoint. You walk in, and maybe your entry or your living room feels dark, and it's the paint color. Nothing is easier than putting up a fresh coat of paint, modernizing the backdrop of your home. And then you can look at things like window coverings and area rugs to anchor rooms and introduce color and throws and pillows. Those are really easy.

DREW SCOTT: And I think the one thing though to, again, hit about is, a lot of people, they'll watch HGTV, they'll go and binge on Discovery Plus and see all these shows and think, all right I can do that. Or they'll watch videos on YouTube. The thing is there are certain things that are great for you to do, painting and whatnot. Some demolition work can be great too. But there are projects, you really should work with professionals.

You think it's going to cost you more because you have someone come in. You have to pay them for their time and whatnot. But in reality, if you value your time, the scope of the work, they'll get done faster, they'll stick to a budget better. And at the end of the day, you'll have a better quality job done. And so you'll never truly enjoy a space if it's just sort of a hacky job you did yourself, unless you know what you're doing.

JONATHAN SCOTT: Don't crane a 2,000-pound tree over your own house with a couple of ropes and some wire.

DREW SCOTT: In your buddy's pickup truck.

JONATHAN SCOTT: Actually, here's a funny little-- it happens to everybody. If you're doing structure electricals, any of that stuff, professionals. However, if you want to do anything with trees, big step arborist, you got to bring them in to do that. Back in the day, Drew and I, we were too cheap when we first started renovating our own properties and things like that. This is before I went to college for construction and design.

DREW SCOTT: We'll cut down our own tree.

JONATHAN SCOTT: We had one investment property we got. And it had this really oversized tree, and it was really, really big. It must have been about four stories tall. And it was in a really bad location in the backyard. And we needed a path to go through there. So we're like, no problem, we'll cut it down. But we're not hiring some guy. He wanted $800 to drop this tree. No way.

DREW SCOTT: Forget it. I have the ropes.

JONATHAN SCOTT: There's even a picture somewhere of me with flip-flops and board shorts on and chainsaw. And anyway, we started cutting it. And we had all these ropes pulling it. And we knew that we had to pull it away from the house because we didn't want it to fall in the house.

So we had it all lined up. We did all the math in our heads. Pull, pull, pull. Cut, cut, cut. Damn it! And the tree swung around and flattened the garage. We didn't even anticipate that there was going to be a swing.

DREW SCOTT: Yeah, the swing factor was not in our mind. So this is something we learned really early on because we started doing houses right out of high school, use professionals. And then we went to school, became professionals.

[CHUCKLES]

MARIANNE CANADA: So instead of spending $800 for an arborist, you had to spend thousands of dollars to rebuild the garage.

DREW SCOTT: Exacty.

MARIANNE CANADA: Lesson learned. I actually have a cousin who is from Canada like yourselves. And he is a legit Canadian lumberjack. And when I really learned about the scope of what he does, climbing up in these trees, carrying a running chainsaw, it was like, he earns every penny.

JONATHAN SCOTT: It is Joe from Canada, right?

DREW SCOTT: Yeah, we know Joe.

JONATHAN SCOTT: I know Joe from Canada.

MARIANNE CANADA: Oh, yes. It's that Joe.

[LAUGHTER]

JONATHAN SCOTT: Still today. So we've lived in Vegas for 10, 11 years or something like that. 13 years, 11 years, yeah. And now we're both in LA. It's funny because even today people will still be like, oh, do you know Mark from Canada? Yeah. of course, I do, he's great.

DREW SCOTT: There's a lot of people there.

JONATHAN SCOTT: Creepy, but you know.

[CHUCKLES]

MARIANNE CANADA: Yeah. And we don't like to talk about Mark. Oh my gosh. Well, I want to talk a little bit more about Celebrity IOU. Well, first of all, I do want to ask, this is just a pure curiosity on my part.

DREW SCOTT: Yes, Brad Pitt's hair smells nice.

MARIANNE CANADA: Oh my god, just tell me everything. Does he smell was good?

JONATHAN SCOTT: It's amazing.

MARIANNE CANADA: It really wasn't where I was going, but I met you there. No, I want to ask about Kris Jenner. Did she give you any mogul advice because you guys are no slouch in that arena yourself.

DREW SCOTT: It's funny, as we were all getting to know each other more and more over the process, everyone on our crew and Jonathan started saying, Kris Jenner is literally the female version of me.

MARIANNE CANADA: Yes.

DREW SCOTT: Because we're very, sort of, go, go, go, business, business, but family is so important. That's the one thing I-- some people may realize that, but they are such a close family. And the time they spend together, the grandkids and everybody, that is more important than anything else. So it was really cool to see how they really put the kids first.

JONATHAN SCOTT: Yeah. And that whole adding the pool thing that happened, it was actually Kris, who was like, we will figure this out. Who do I need to call? What trades do I need to make sure that we'll do this. Don't worry about the cost. We're making this happen. And so you can see this is a woman when she sets her mind to something, that it's going to happen. And it's actually inspiring to be around that kind of energy.

DREW SCOTT: I'm a Drewdashian, and he's a Joner.

JONATHAN SCOTT: Yeah.

MARIANNE CANADA: Oh my god, you guys were just ready with that one. And the show really does pull at your heartstrings. You weren't kidding when you said, you'll tear up.

And I think something that's so relatable for so many people, whether you're a celebrity or not, is we all can think of at least one person that's impacted your lives that you would love to be able to do something like this for. Do you guys have people like that that you would-- or have you?

DREW SCOTT: This is really great that you're mentioning this. And nobody knows this. But I'm just going to tell you. And now you're getting a sneak peek.

The new season of Forever Home, when it comes out, one of our episodes is one of my groomsmen and one of our best friends. And so it is another moment of that where we were just like, you know what, Jody, Mel are amazing people. And we want to give back to them.

JONATHAN SCOTT: It's actually more along the lines of they have so much dirt on us that we couldn't say no.

DREW SCOTT: Blackmail.

[LAUGHTER]

JONATHAN SCOTT: We told them not to do it.

MARIANNE CANADA: It's just like, let's keep those skeletons in the closet.

DREW SCOTT: Exactly, yeah.

MARIANNE CANADA: Well, I can't wait to see that. That's so exciting, something new to look forward to. You guys have such a relentless drive that there's always more Property Brothers coming.

DREW SCOTT: The big thing for us is just that we really truly love helping families really enjoy their home. Everyone deserves to be in a home that they love. And if you look at it now, we're over 470 episodes that we've done. So 470 renovations we've done for families on the shows.

MARIANNE CANADA: Wow. Congratulations, it's really impressive. It's really impressive, the names that you guys got for Celebrity IOU. You've said some of them, Brad Pitt, Melissa McCarthy, Gwyneth Paltrow. Do you have any celebrities still on your list that you're obsessed with that you would love to get for maybe a season four or just meet?

DREW SCOTT: I've said time and time again, I want to reach out to Queen Elizabeth and see if we can do Edinburgh Castle. That would be great. I'd love to do a little make over maybe in--

JONATHAN SCOTT: Need some work.

MARIANNE CANADA: Need some freshening up.

DREW SCOTT: Add a bathroom. Actually, we have a lot of names. The thing is it's now, it's not even just a matter of us having a wish list of people we'd like to go out to meet. And we want people from all different walks of life, celebrity or musicians, athletes, actors, you name it.

But also, we get a lot of celebrities who are reaching out to us now and saying, I saw the show, I love the show. And I know somebody who really deserves this. And so it's nice that there's sort of this two-way flow of communication.

JONATHAN SCOTT: I would love to do an episode with the Obamas. I think that would be amazing. They give back to so many people already, and they're just full of love. But that would be really cool to burn up. And also, I play basketball, and I'd really like to get in there with Rock and see who's best.

DREW SCOTT: I feel like you'd like to have The Rock do an episode. That's the Dwayne Johnson--

JONATHAN SCOTT: Whenever we're doing something like-- so for Brother Versus Brother, whenever we shoot the commercials for it, they're always really high energy, high impact, lots of stunts, things like that. And Drew's always-- or no, we were doing a magazine, Reveal magazine. And the first issue, Drew's hanging off the E from Reveal. And we're like, there's something funny happening with your arms. Straighten your arm a little.

DREW SCOTT: I was picturing myself like The Rock hanging from a helicopter. I was like an action star. And they were all like, it looks really weird.

JONATHAN SCOTT: You're not The Rock, first of all.

DREW SCOTT: Have you seen my people's eyebrow?

JONATHAN SCOTT: I don't know. But anyway, we always had this good laughs about it. I think it was a little tricky with COVID because people aren't traveling, and we had to stop down for a while. But now people are getting back. And I like that we're seeing a lot of requests.

MARIANNE CANADA: Yeah, it's so fun. My 12-year-old would like to request Harry Styles. So just put that on your list.

DREW SCOTT: That would be great. That would be amazing.

MARIANNE CANADA: Well, now I'm going to turn the tables on you guys because I really want to know what it feels like to be considered a celebrity yourselves. You had a humble upbringing with a close family. And now your pop culture icons. Do you remember the first time you got recognized in public?

JONATHAN SCOTT: I do remember.

DREW SCOTT: I do too.

JONATHAN SCOTT: The very first time-- and this is a long time ago. We were actors as kids. But we never did anything big enough where people would really recognize you. But after starting Property Brothers, it was only probably three months into the show airing, and someone came up to me at an airport, and they're like, oh my gosh, oh my gosh, you're Drew Scott. I'm like, well, no, I'm Jonathan, but OK, I'll take it.

DREW SCOTT: Yeah, yeah, I'll take it. We had done our first bigger acting gig, was a commercial when we were, I think grade 10 or something. And I remember we were at a gas station, and somebody was like, hey, you're the twins from that commercial. We did it as twins. And it was played in Canada during the CFL. It was played everywhere as national, and every commercial break had it.

So everyone was like, oh, you're the guys from the commercial, amazing, amazing. So at first I was like, that's pretty cool. And then times a thousand once Property Brothers hit the air because everybody wanted us to come and give them tips on their house.

JONATHAN SCOTT: It's good for Drew to get out of a parking ticket. It's not as good for maintaining privacy when I go to the hardware store just to grab something for my own house. And people will literally run over with their plans and ask, can you help me pick--

DREW SCOTT: It doesn't help when you're wearing your Lowe's apron while you're at Lowe's.

JONATHAN SCOTT: That's true.

[LAUGHTER]

MARIANNE CANADA: You should just consider a different outfit.

JONATHAN SCOTT: Darn it.

MARIANNE CANADA: Oh my gosh. Well, and you guys have also been penned as sex symbols. And I've seen you guys reading like thirsty tweets. I want to know how many thirsty tweets do you guys think you get. And can you share a recent favorite?

JONATHAN SCOTT: What's a thirsty tweet?

DREW SCOTT: Well, just a super sexy tweet. The thing I find is the funniest-- because I've been with Linda for 10 years, since the very beginning of the show. And Jonathan had been single from time to time over the years. And so he gets more than me. But there are so many people we'd see on Twitter all the time, and they're proposing to Jonathan on Twitter.

JONATHAN SCOTT: Well, not too romantic. Zoe would like that. OK, I guess.

MARIANNE CANADA: I'll take a shot. Well, and that was going to be my next question is. What do your partners think of this because you're all in the entertainment industry. Jonathan, you and Zoe famously met on Carpool Karaoke.

And Drew, you and Linda both have your own podcast, which I am also at home obsessed with your podcast. And she's the creative director for Scott Brothers Entertainment, shows up in your shows all the time. How do you guys mix business and pleasure and do it so well? And are there any times it hasn't worked out?

DREW SCOTT: Well, I will say that's the one thing, is we do so much and we do so much together. Well, speaking for me and Linda especially, and she is a creative director with our magazine Reveal as well.

It's tough because when we're trying to shut work down and just focus on us time, inevitably, we end up talking shop. So that's where we've had to really find that line where we can separate so we know this is not a time for talking business. Let's just enjoy each other's company.

JONATHAN SCOTT: I didn't know you had the ability to shut down and stop working.

[LAUGHTER]

DREW SCOTT: I let my battery drain.

MARIANNE CANADA: I know the latest episode of your podcast, you guys actually talked about renewal.

DREW SCOTT: It's a huge thing. I think it's to constantly check in, it's not just New Year's Eve. And then you think of your New Year's resolutions, to have a regular process where you're checking in with each other, sort of that renewal idea or finding ways to make time together more effortless is so key for us.

DREW SCOTT: And Jonathan, how about you and Zoe?

JONATHAN SCOTT: We are very good at just shutting that stuff down, shutting it out, spending that time at home, making it special. We're obsessed with-- well, first of all, she's an amazing cook. And so I've never eaten better in my life. It's nice to--

DREW SCOTT: She'll make us Yorkshire puddings, and Jonathan is supposed to bring it to us. And then when he brings it, there's one little Yorkshire pudding or cookies or whatever. And we're like, wait a second. And he eats it on the way.

JONATHAN SCOTT: I get first dibs, the perks. But no, obviously, she's used to having those kinds of demands and having to do a lot of stuff in the public eye too. And so I think she understands. And well, we understand each other and how valuable that downtime is. So we're pretty good at separating it.

MARIANNE CANADA: All right. Well, I know that you guys are about to need to go. So we can't let you leave without weighing in on our favorite segment, Defend the Trend.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

Defend the Trend . This is where you give us your hot take on a relevant design trend. And this week, in honor of our favorite twins being on, we are talking about design symmetry.

So I want to know as identical twins, what are your thoughts on this kind of mirror image interior design, spaces that are so symmetrical they almost look photoshopped. Do you love the idea of mirror image design or do you embrace the quirks and asymmetry in life?

DREW SCOTT: Being symmetrical ourselves, being twins-- No, I think the one thing--

JONATHAN SCOTT: We're not symmetrical. I'm way better looking.

DREW SCOTT: Yes, very true. Yeah. And I'm built like The Rock, so no big deal. I think for me though, I love symmetry when it doesn't really jump out in your face. Because I think within the design, you need certain things that will offset that symmetry a little bit. Otherwise, it's almost like if you have matchy-matchy materials in a space, it's boring.

JONATHAN SCOTT: Yeah, it depends. I think for me, it's less about just the symmetry and more about the chaos. If you walk into a space, sometimes symmetry brings calm to the space, and it just makes sense.

Other times, for myself, I like things a little eclectic. I like things to be a little bit different, kind of unique. And so I like imperfection. I think there's beauty in that.

So there's no blanket statement for me that would work across it because I think it's more about taking away the chaos so that a space makes sense. And that's unique to every space.

DREW SCOTT: The big thing if you watch our shows and again, anybody listening, we really encourage you to hop on Discovery Plus because you have 400 plus episodes of our shows you could binge watch. And then obviously, the new episodes--

JONATHAN SCOTT: And you should see some of our hairstyles back in the day.

DREW SCOTT: Oh my gosh, yeah, Especially Jonathan, it's terrible. But as you watch the shows, the thing for us is every design is unique. But we always look at design with function for the family first. Whereas, I think some people in design, they'll think aesthetic first. And you'll never enjoy a pretty space if it doesn't function for how you use the space.

JONATHAN SCOTT: You don't know how many arguments I've gotten into designers who are designing a home for a family of five with no upper cabinets.

[LAUGHTER]

Not a good thing. So, no tub for a family that has kids under two. That's not good.

MARIANNE CANADA: Yeah, no tub or white floors. That's a recent fight I got into with a friend of mine. Well, Jonathan, Drew, this has just been a dream to have you on HGTV Obsessed. Where can everyone find you all on social media for marriage proposals and the like? And where can we watch Celebrity IOU and all of your shows?

JONATHAN SCOTT: So you can find us pretty much every day on HGTV. All of our previous episodes and the new ones coming out on Discovery Plus as well, if you like to stream. Also social media, I'm @JonathanScott.

DREW SCOTT: And I'm @MrDrewScott. And if you do want to check out Linda, my podcast At Home, we really love this because it's our chance to sit down and have great conversations with guests about relationships. Relationships with ourselves, our community, and our planet. And so it's a deep dive AtHomePodcast.net. And we're anywhere you listen to podcasts.

JONATHAN SCOTT: If you have not had a chance to pick up Reveal magazine, we do have our own magazine Reveal and it really gives you stuff-- you can actually walk away with every issue and improve something in your home or in your life. And so, it's worth checking out. I like the social conversation. That's one of the most important things for me, just knowing that we have that great connection with our audience is pretty special.

DREW SCOTT: Thanks to any of our fans that are listening. We love you guys. And we do what we do for you.

JONATHAN SCOTT: Were you obsessed?

DREW SCOTT: Yeah.

MARIANNE CANADA: Yeah. Well, everybody loves you, shows, podcasts, video game, home furnishing, magazine. I hope what's up next for you guys is a nap. We would love to have you guys on again.

DREW SCOTT: Sounds good.

JONATHAN SCOTT: Thank you.

BRAD: Marianne, have you ever gotten a thirsty DM or a comment on your socials?

MARIANNE CANADA: I asked our community manager, Gabby, because she moderates every comment. There was this one guy who called me, Thick. This was like a few years ago. And so a lot of people weren't familiar with that term as a compliment. And it sparked a pretty rabid conversation about whether this gentleman meant that as a compliment. I was very firmly on the side that he did mean it as a compliment because of the context.

That's the only time I can remember. Mostly, everyone wants me to be their mom. Everyone's like, I want Marianne to be my mom. The vibe on HGTV Handmade, it's not thirsty.

However, my friend Jason Pickens, he occasionally is on the channel. And he has a couple of people who are very enthusiastic about him. Let's just say it's beyond marriage proposal, which I feel like is like fairly tame.

BRAD: That's tame. What are they saying about Jason?

MARIANNE CANADA: Well, they want him to have their babies, which would be hard just with his anatomy. He had a couple of fans in particular who were just like, yeah. They were here for it. But in general, the vibe is not of that nature. Everybody is just here for the crafts.

BRAD: Amazing.

[CHUCKLES]

MARIANNE CANADA: All right. Well, thanks everyone for joining us today for our special Property Brothers episode. This is like bucket list checked off for me. I want to give a huge thanks to both Drew and Jonathan Scott for all the laughs.
